Rents outside London barely moving, says Valuation Office Agency

Median rents across the country stood at £575 per month by the end of March, says the Valuation Office Agency.

In London, they rose by £132 a month during the year to March, to stand at £1,250 – around double the national figure.
The statistics are based on 470,000 tenancies.

In London, mayor Boris Johnson came under fresh pressure to impose rent controls in light of the figures.

Darren Johnson, a Green Party member of the London Assembly, said: “We cannot go on pricing low-paid workers out of swathes of London – it’s hurting our economy and pricing out a generation of renters.
“The mayor has ruled out any meaningful reform to slow rent rises, preferring voluntary measures which clearly are not working.

“We give our tenants some of the weakest protections in Europe. We should copy the smart rent controls and security enjoyed by tenants in countries like France and Germany where rent can’t rise faster than inflation, guaranteeing fairness and predictability for tenants and landlords.”
