Tenant tip-off ends in £3,000 fine for landlord

A tenant tip-off to a council has ended with a landlord fined almost £3,000 after her property was found to be contravening the Management of Houses of Multiple Occupation Regulations 2006.

Helen Allen of Nottingham pleaded guilty to three offences in relation to her property in Coventry.

Officers from Coventry council visited the property after receiving a complaint from a tenant and found the house had been converted into two flats.

They did not have adequate fire protection, had inadequate fire doors and no fire blankets in the kitchens. Electrical and gas services were not separated and the services were not accessible by all tenants, particularly in an emergency.

Also, heating controls were not accessible to all tenants as the boiler and thermostat were situated in the first floor flat.

The first floor tenant had to gain access to his flat by passing through the ground floor flat and the property had extensive damp due to lack of maintenance.

Allen was fined a total of £2,911.
