Landlord fined £9,000 over unfit properties
A landlord has been fined £9,000 after being found guilty of six offences connected with having properties unfit for human habitation.
Lancashire landlord Casey Harwood had tenants in one property without heating; in another property – turned into flats without planning consent – one unit had only one electrical socket.
Blackpool magistrates’ court has heard that Harwood continued to operate his investment properties despite legal notices telling him to decant the homes.
He has now been fined £9,000 following action initiated by Blackpool council. A spokeswoman for the authority told the court that one specific property had no fire or smoke alarms, was excessively cold and had windows which could not be opened because they would fall out. There was damp and mould and no food store.
