Tell the Chancellor what he should do … but please, be polite

Now you have a rare opportunity to tell Phillip Hammond and Treasury civil servants exactly where they are going wrong with their approach to the private rental sector, and what changes they should make this autumn.

That’s because the Treasury is issuing guidance to everyone – agents and everyone else – on how to submit a Budget representation ahead of this autumn’s announcements.

No decision has yet been made on the date of the Budget, but we do know from previous announcements that there will only be one major fiscal statement each year in future. So instead of there being both a spring and an autumn budget, there will be just one – each November – with a minor statement in the spring.

Now the Treasury wants to hear public views as to what the November measures should be – and we can guess that the private rental sector will feature strongly.

“In line with this, the representations process will not open ahead of Spring Statement 2018. You are therefore strongly encouraged to submit a representation ahead of Autumn Budget 2017 in order to contribute to the policy-making process” says a Treasury announcement.

“Although the date of Autumn Budget 2017 has not yet been confirmed, we have opened the Budget representations portal earlier than usual to allow more time for HM Treasury to note and consider representations” it continues.
