Charity briefs new MPs over electrical safety of rental properties
An electrical safety charity has written to the new intake of MPs to explain why electrical safety in Britain’s homes needs to be urgently addressed.
Electrical Safety First (ESF), a charity dedicated to reducing deaths and accidents caused by electricity, says that electricity causes over half of all domestic fires.
ESF has long campaigned for better regulation of electrical safety in the Private Rented Sector, where it says a third of all properties fail to meet basic standards.
The charity is also lobbying to improve safety legislation around the recall of dangerous electrical products.
A survey carried out by ESF revealed that almost half of respondents had never seen a recall notice – the announcement issued by manufacturers to recall faulty electrical products.
The charity says that this suggests that there are millions of recalled – and therefore dangerous – electrical items still in people’s homes.
ESF’s director general, Phil Buckle, says that last week’s Queen’s Speech put forward a number of Bills which could be used to tackle some of the issues the charity is campaigning on.
“We hope that by contacting the new intake of MPs now, we can get their support for regulations we believe can save lives and protect properties.”
