Landlord pays out thousands after illegal eviction
A landlord has been ordered to pay a fine and costs of £2,925 for unlawfully evicting a tenant from a house in Tamworth, Staffordshire.
Georgina East has pleaded guilty at Stafford Magistrates Court to throwing out one of her tenants in December 2014 using threatening behaviour, and then changing the locks.
East is the director of property management company Propertarian Limited, and operates numerous properties within Tamworth. She had previously accepted a caution for a similar offence in 2013.
When officers from Tamworth council responded to a complaint from the tenant – who was forced to sleep rough – it was found that East had evicted him without serving any valid written notice or seeking possession through the courts.
It was also found that East had threatened the tenant with an Alsatian dog if he did not leave.
The court issued an order for East to pay the fine and costs within seven days.
