The select committee monitoring the Department of Housing, Communities and Local Government will continue its deliberations today on the government’s ban on letting agents fees on tenants.
This afternoon representatives of the Association of Residential Letting Agents, and the National Approved Lettings Scheme will give oral evidence about the effect of the ban to MPs on the committee.
The mayor of Newham – Sir Robin Wales – will also give evidence about his borough’s strenuous efforts to improve the lettings sector through enforcement action, licensing and even a league table of lettings agents’ performance as voted by tenants.
The DHCLG select committee’s investigations are called “pre-legislative scrutiny” and, as the title suggests, happen before formal legislation is put to parliament.
The government has already announced that the ban itself will not come into effect before spring 2019.
