Anti-Osborne tax rally this week will hear from raft of industry experts

Original Author: Graham Norwood

The line-up has been revealed for the so-called “Tenants’ Tax Summit” this week – the campaign rally for supporters of a possible judicial review of George Osborne’s changes to mortgage tax relief for buy to let investors.

The event is being organised by Steve Bolton and Chris Cooper, two landlords who oppose the proposed restriction of mortgage interest tax relief at a basic rate, even for higher rate-paying landlords, and are seeking consent to initiate a judicial review.

The rally, at London’s ILEC Conference Centre, Earl’s Court, on Thursday starting at 9.30am will be addressed by Lord Howard Flight, a Tory peer who recently wrote a highly-critical letter to the government entitled ‘Why The Government Is Wrong To Attack Buy To Let’.

Also speaking will be Steve Bolton himself – founder and executive chairman of private investment group Platinum Partners – plus Richard Dyson, personal finance editor of the Daily Telegraph and a vocal critic of the raft of anti-buy to let measures introduced in recent months by the government.

World champion athlete and buy to let supporter Kriss Akabusi will give a motivational speech, while there will also be an address by David Smith, policy director of the Residential Landlords’ Association.

Jennifer Powers, a legal adviser to several housing industry organisations, will also speak.

Letting Agent Today has already extensively covered the attempt by Bolton and Cooper to secure a review of section 24 of the Finance (No. 2) Act 2015 which includes the proposed restriction of mortgage interest tax relief at a basic rate, even for higher rate-paying landlords. This follows Osborne’s announcement on the interest tax relief change, initially made almost a year ago in July 2015.
