Regulation of all letting agents in Wales comes a step closer
The Welsh Government will next month introduce its Housing Bill, which will make licensing of all letting agents and all private landlords mandatory.
All will then have to follow a compulsory code of practice.
Carl Sargeant, the housing minister, will make a statement in the Welsh Assembly on November 19 before scrutiny of the Bill begins.
The Government’s proposed timetable is that the Bill receives Royal Assent next summer, with implementation of its various elements to follow.
Last month, the Welsh Government published a White Paper, called ‘Renting Homes – A Better Way for Wales’, on a new legal framework for the private rented sector. This consultation proposes introducing a ‘standard contract’ for use throughout the sector. For the first time, all landlords would have to issue written rental contracts.
This new legal framework is set to become the subject of another Bill, due to be introduced next year in Wales.
